What "Divided We Fall" is about :
Historical background :
The 1915 Rent Strikes started in the back-courts of Govan tenements. While workers were risking their lives at the front during World War I, landlords back at home tried to increase rents. Mary Barbour, a Scottish political activist, community leader, social policy pioneer and later, local councillor and magistrate, played an outstanding part in mobilizing working-class families – especially women – to challenge the power of landlords and the state. This resulted in a famous victory in the struggle for decent, affordable housing and led to the passing of one of Europe’s first rent restriction acts.
Our show follows the fortunes of one family at this time of social change, and features the characters of Mary Barbour and John MacLean and describes how their actions affected the lives of ordinary working people at the time.
"Divided We Fall" will bring the story back to the place of its origins - having its run to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of these events. Our show, in the Pearce Institute, on the 17th November will be 100 years to the day since Mary Barbour and her army marched from Govan to protest the rent increase.
